“Painting is but another word for feeling.”
John Constable (1776-1837)

“Give the paint a chance. Give the brush a chance.”
John Marin (1870-1953)

“Since I cannot sing, I paint.”
Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986)

John Marin, one of the first American painters to embrace abstraction in the twentieth century, intuited that the key to painting with feeling lay with the brush in his hand and the gestures he made with it. In this practical, three-day course, spread over three weeks and beginning with John Constable, whose loose, painterly brushstrokes paved the way for Impressionism and Expressionism, we study the work and ideas of three artists for whom the human emotions were the most powerful tools in their watercolour kit box.

Week One: John Constable and the sky

Week Two: John Marin and the seashore

Week Three: Georgia O’Keeffe and the desert

All-comers welcome.
